How To Determine Your Tenant Rights

How do I know what my landlord can and can’t do?
As a renter you have rights. It’s important to know your rights and know who to contact if you have a problem with your landlord.

The Fair Housing Act says you must be offered housing fairly and without discrimination regardless of the following, which are known as protected classes:

  • race
  • color
  • country where you were born
  • religion
  • sex
  • familial status
  • disability

Also, depending on where you live, there may be local ordinances that prevent discrimination based on sexual orientation, and in some cases gender identity. Learn more about national housing protection laws

I want to know what to do about a rental company making a fraudulent claim in their advertisement for the house I rented. They promised central air when in fact the unit on top of the house does not work. On 6-2-10 I spoke to the rental agency and they said they have no intention of fixing it or installing a new one. There is a small wall unit in the den but it certainly is not central air and it's too small to cool the whole house. Is there anything I can do? It is beginning to get hot now.
